5G-FIRE : Revolutionizing firefighting with 5G connectivity
We are excited to share that our project, “5G Firefighters’ Instant Remote Eye” (5G-FIRE), has been selected as part of the IMAGINE-B5G Open Call for the “Firefighting and forest surveillance” Vertical Experiment. This pioneering initiative is set to transform how fire incidents are detected, managed, and addressed with the integration of advanced 5G technology.
What is 5G-FIRE ?
The 5G-FIRE project aims to enhance early fire detection and support decision-making during fire emergencies. By embedding 5G capabilities into our AI-powered detection device, we are creating an advanced system for firefighters to remotely monitor and control video streams from high-altitude cameras or drones deployed at fire-prone areas.
5G-FIRE will help fire teams overcome the limitations of existing communication infrastructures, allowing them to remotely control cameras, zoom in on areas of interest, and stream high-quality video with no latency, critical for making life-saving decisions on the fly.
Why 5G connectivity ?
Traditionally, fire departments have relied on basic alert systems and 4G connections to detect fire threats, but these systems struggle to provide the necessary real-time data for effective decision-making. The introduction of 5G is a game changer.
With 5G, firefighters will gain the ability to :
- Stream high-definition video without latency, ensuring timely response.
- Control and zoom cameras remotely, enhancing situational awareness.
- Transmit multi-spectral images (visible and infrared) to aid in the validation of fire incidents.
By testing this new capability in real-world scenarios, we will also explore the use of AI and edge computing, ensuring the system operates with minimal hardware requirements while maintaining maximum efficiency and safety.
The impact :
This project, builds on the 4 years of expertise in AI-driven environmental threat detection. The core product, CamİA, is a versatile and Plug&Play Detection Case capable of deploying on various platforms like drones, high towers, and other supports. By upgrading it with 5G, we expect to significantly improve the speed and reliability of fire incident detection and response.
5G-FIRE will not only aid in forest firefighting but will also have broader applications in Search&Rescue, environmental monitoring and other crisis management. The ultimate goal is to reduce response times and improve the precision of fire rescue operations, saving both lives and resources.
What’s next ?
As we move forward with this project, we will conduct real-time experiments in partnership with local fire rescue teams, utilizing EURECOM’s 5G facilities. We look forward to showcasing the power of 5G in enabling safer, more efficient firefighting and disaster management operations.
Stay tuned for more updates on “5G-FIRE” and its potential to reshape the future of firefighting!
